Respiration in Earthworm takes place by diffusion of gases through the general body surface. The gaseous exchange, i.e., intake of O2 and giving out CO2, takes place between the blood capillaries of the outer epidermis and the surface film of moisture contributed by secreted mucus, excreted wastes and coelomic fluid. Haemoglobin dissolved in the plasma of blood acts as a respiratory pigment, transporting O2 to the body tissues.
