The conception of process capability is dissimilar from the concept of process permanence. Process capability is the ability of the procedure to manufacture products that meet specifications. Capability cannot be determined without knowing product specifications. On further, a procedure is said to be steady if it is only partial by common causes. Knowledge of product terms is not necessary to judge process stability. For a stable process, the feature of interest has a constant and predictable distribution over time. Therefore, significant predictions can be made regarding the probability of products being out of specification in the future. Depending upon this probability, a stable procedure may be classified as capable or not capable.
