Testing of population proportion of cancer data.

I am writing a report for class and I need to understand what statistical procedure was used. The article does not give the beginning number but they do say 15 melanoma patients enrolled in the study failed to show sustained improvement from the modified immune cells. Twelve of those patients have died, and the other three are near death. [So that equals the 15, then they go on to say] But the success with two patients, who are cancer-free more than a year. [That looks like 17 total] The article also says 62,000 patients will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and 7910 will die. Can you help me?
