When groups do not work together in a collaborative effort, it is often very difficult for goals to be met and for the group to succeed. Everyone in the group needs to listen and evaluate the other members ideas and thoughts - when this doesn't take place, the group will fail. Often it is helpful to elect a leader who will run the agenda of the meetings in order to assure that the group stays on tasks. This often creates a very effective group. Additionally, each member must and should put forth the same amount of effort to the task at hand. When not all the group members are working equally as hard, tension is created and members feel that the others are getting credit for work they did not do. Everyone in the group must agree or be somewhat satisfied with the direction that things go on and must each partake equally in all tasks and meetings. An effective leader should not be seen as a dictator - he/she must take everyone's thoughts and opinions into account as well, be sure not to favor any one particular person and must distribute the work equally to all members based on their strengths and aptitudes. When group members are given tasks that they are not that competent in, the group often fails. All members need to have good morale and work together.
