My immediate reaction?as a woman?is that violence against another person is more about power and control than gender. The political theorist, Michel Foucault, wrote an excellent book about prisons and punishment that breaks down the relationship between the oppressor and the oppressed, essentially saying that the body is the physical manifestation of the soul (Foucault, 1995).
