Using random sampling to estimate population size

In this week's experiment, we will examine the technique of random sampling as a tool for the estimation of large populations.

After reading the background material, can you think of any ecological experiments in which the random sampling technique could be helpful? Post your ideas, and do a bit of research to see if any scientists may have actually used this idea as well.
