On Workplace Oppression

Oppression is that prolonged state of cruel or unjust maltreatment when individuals or groups are subjected to abusive, burdensome, adverse and anxiety-laden conditions that affect the psychological, social and physical well-being of those being in such a state. Oppression is abhorred, unjust and is abusive of the human rights that we all inherently possess. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been written to protect people from oppression and has done so by clarifying and articulating the fundamental freedoms governments all over the world must allow its citizens. In the workplace, oppression happens. It can be institutionalized via rules that subjugate abuse, belittle, depersonalize and enslave the individual under the guise of 'employment policies' or by playing into the fears of individuals who are afraid of losing their employment. Oppression in the workplace can be anything that takes the power out of the employee and makes them feel powerless and the underclass subject to management's whims. In factories across China, employees are institutionally oppressed - the hours are long, the conditions severe, the pays are low, and there is no chance at improvement or mobility.
