...as for Puritanism, they were certainly austere. As I'm sure you already know, their strict dress and public moral code owed almost everything to the at-the-time Calvinist belief that nothing should be done unless explicitly stated in the Judeo-Christian Scriptures. This was very different from, say, the Lutheran conviction that as long as something wasn't prohibited in Scripture, it was acceptable. Perhaps that partially explains why the colleagues you refer to would say that they understood "fear of the Lord" more than all others...
