It can be argued that the Puritans understood the Fear of God and Conscience for several reasons:
1. Their understanding of Fear of God is one that encompasses several important Christian characteristics that Christians ought to move towards such as humility, gratefulness and compassion.
Refer to "A Pilgrim's Progress" by J. Bunyan. "The covetous man feareth not God. This also is plain from the word because it sitteth covetousness and the fear of God in direct opposition. Men that fear God are said to hate covetousness, Exod. xviii. 21."
In other words, keeping our eyes on God keeps us from temptation to looking at the world's wants/desires" . As we keep our focus on God and our "fear" meaning reverence of God, we are reminded of God's love and compassion for us. We are reminded of his sacrifice ...
