The first thing to realize is that the doctrine of the trinity evolved very gradually over the history of Christianity. Many of the earliest controversies focused on the nature of Jesus and the manner in which he could be said to be both divine and human and thus on whether all three members of the trinity were in fact equal. The controversies were not just a matter of theology but also of church authority and the development of a church hierarchy. When the Roman Empire became Christian under Constantine, the Church hierarchy became an extension of imperial power. This required a unified episcopate with clear lines of authority and responsibility.
