The word "Buddhism" comes from the Sanskrit word budhi, meaning to "wake up". The purpose of the world religion of Buddhism is to awaken or enlighten what is real in the soul. Buddhism is over 2,500 years old and numbers over 300 million followers. Though most Buddhist live in Asia, a growing number of Buddhists can be found in the continents of Europe, Australia, and North America. Buddhism teaches that all life is interconnected, so compassion is natural, essential and the foundation of this world religion.
Buddhism is a tradition that focuses on personal spiritual development. Buddhists strive for a deep insight into the true nature of life and do not worship gods or deities. The ultimate reality is to enter Nirvana, which is accomplished once a person reaches the highest goal, which is Enlightment (i.e., through Dharma, which is the teachings ...
