RESPONSE:

1. What sacred elements characterize Hindu religious traditions?

Hinduism religious traditions have a vastness and depth of culture and traditions, which include the vastness of sacred elements, and meaning of these elements, that make up these Hindu religious traditions. Because of this vastness, a complete list all the sacred elements of Hinduism that make up the Hindu religious traditions would be difficult and beyond the scope of this paper. In fact, the Hindu culture and traditions have evolved through thousands of years. Generally, in Hindu traditions, Hinduism is considered the eternal faith, which is a religion, but also a code of life (based on the practice of Dharma). Hinduism has no known founder, so any person that practices Dharma may call her or himself a Hindu, and can question "the authority of any scripture or even the existence of the Divine". For the Hindu, Dharma means to hold on to her or his inner law, which leads the Hindu from ignorance to Truth (Suresh, 2007). Although part of the religious side of Hinduism, the reading of the Holy Scriptures (Shastras) or Vedas not a direct path to self-realization, but instead the teachings of the seers are above and provide a basis and a path for spirituality. "Despite being the oldest religion, the truth realized by the seers proves that the Truth and path provided by the meaning of Hinduism is beyond time" (Suresh, 2007). They have a belief in salvation and exalt "devotion" above Karma; and, also above the performance of rites and ceremonies. They have an extreme reverence paid to the Guru, and the doctrine of the Holy Name. For the Hindu, there is an initiation through a mantra and a sacramental meal. Hinduism includes the institution of sectarian orders of Sanyasins (Suresh, 2007).

Castes or social groups is an essential to the sacred feature of Hindu traditions, even though there may be a relaxing of the rules of caste, sometimes even ignoring all caste distinctions of the four social groups (castes) (Suresh, 2007). However, traditionally, the four castes (varnas) were significant because the system represents a followers' order in life and religion, with people accepting their order in this life. The castes are grouped into four main categories, and then further sub-groups or castes: ...
