It is clear from the information provided in the vignette that Carol's problem is alcohol-related. She shows signs of several symptoms characteristic of Alcohol intoxication such as recent consumption of alcohol (Criterion A), impaired judgment; and or impaired social or occupational functioning (Criterion B) that developed during or after drinking alcohol (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR [APA}. 2000. p. 215). However, the vignette does not indicate that Carol has diagnostic criteria for Alcohol intoxication with symptoms such as impaired or attention in memory; slurred speech; lack of coordination; unsteady gait; stupor or coma; and /or nystagmus (Criterion C) [p. 215]. There is also no evidence in the vignette that Carol is experiencing withdrawal symptoms as in the Diagnostic criteria for Alcohol Withdrawal (291.81) such as anxiety, insomnia, and/or vomiting (Criteria B). In addition, the diagnosis for Alcohol Dependence (304.90) requires more symptoms for Carol to be diagnosed with this Axis I disorder. Alcohol Dependence is associated with higher levels of intake, or with more severe alcohol-related problems (DSM-IV-TR, p. 213).
