Marques & Lima (2011) examined the relationship between living in rural areas and an individual's level of psychological health. The study had two main goals: (1) to explore the association between living in an industrialized neighborhood and psychological health, and (2) exploring the relationship between "perceived industrial activity" and levels of psychological health. They hypothesized that living in industrial area would be associated with three factors: (a) psychological well being, (b) low dispositional optimisms, and (c) higher anxiety and depression (p. 316). In order to test their hypothesis they used a quasi-experimental design that compared the psychological health of individuals living in four different areas classified as three industrial areas, and one area described as non-industrial areas.

The study also investigated the link between realistic perceptions and mental health. Based on their findings, the researchers did not find significant differences between samples from the four areas regarding factors such as: (age), gender, (b) marital relations and (c) level of education; however, they did find ...
