Schizophrenia is the most severe mental illness of all, and its hallmark feature "is significant loss of contact with reality, referred to as psychosis" (Butcher, Mineka & Hooley, p. 490, 2007). It is also characterized by "extreme oddities in perception, thinking, action, sense of self and manner of relating to others" (Butcher et al., p. 490. 2007).
