Leadership also differs from power and influence, due to the fact that power and influence are each components of the total leadership dynamic. Power differs from leadership and influence, due to the fact that power is defined as the ability to accomplish objectives etc., or to cause something to happen. Power also differs from leadership at influence due to the fact that power is only potential energy unless activated and utilized efficiently. Influence differs from leadership and power, due to the fact that influence is defined as the ability to effect or sway others, which is essentially a psychological power over others that can manifest from simply being an outstanding individual, which may prompt or influence others to seek to be outstanding individuals as well, for example.

Leaders exhibit leadership in contingency leadership theory by influencing the subordinates within the organization to be able to utilize a fluid and adaptable organizational structure in order to be able to adapt to various internal and external environmental situations that an organization would certainly face. Leaders accomplish this by being examples of adaptability and fluid leadership, which is accomplished by these leaders having a clean and understanding of the importance of being able to adapt to changing circumstances, and having a great deal of experience and knowledge in doing so. Due to these factors, one of the primary characteristics that help leaders to exhibit leadership and contingency leadership theory is wisdom and knowledge, which provides these leaders with a tremendous knowledge base from which to draw upon in order to be able to decide what actions would be best in a given situation. Leaders also exhibit leadership and contingency leadership by having a genuine interest in improving their ability to cope with differing situations, and to utilize the leadership styles that are most appropriate to a given situation, such as utilizing a democratic leadership style when it is necessary or an authoritarian leadership style in other situations.
