As you compare similarities and differences of the theories of cognitive developmental theory developed Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory of Development, and Erikson's psychosocial development theory, many commonalities exist among them, especially in how they view development in stages or processes.

Likewise, Erikson demonstrates an "Epigenetic principle" (college.cengage.com/.../students/course/powerpoint/ch02.ppt) to his theory. For example, he looks at development in the form of interrelated stages or processes.
