Personality types are characterized based on categories. Thus, psychologists determine a person's personality based on categorical characteristics. For example, in personality specific traits (or states) that have similar patterns are based on an identified category of personality within taxonomy (list of characteristics) of personalities. Although traits are primarily characteristics and not traits, traits have been assessed using inventories that categorize individuals in groups based on their specific traits (e.g., Myers-Briggs Typology Inventory (MBTI, Costra & McCrae, l982, 2003).
