There is no one clear definition of personality in the psychological literature; It is a contested concept and will continue to be so. There are a few concepts we can use to construct something tolerably usable. The concept of the changing personality is also dealt with below. I will deal with four major writers on psychology (among other things) and their view of the personality, where it comes from, and what comprises it: Plato, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and J.P. Sartre.

Plato saw the personality as the soul. This was divided into three parts: the reason, the passion, and a third part that is tough to describe.
