Based on the existential theory, I would be interested to know whether the distress was associated with a lack of meaning and purpose in life was contributing to her distress. Existentialists emphasize free will and the search for meaning in life. Next, I would establish a therapeutic relationship with the client, and ask specific questions to take an inventory of her personal strengths and weaknesses. With this procedure, I would be interested in examining her social networks. After determining the therapeutic approach, I would use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM-IV-TR], 2000) to classify her symptoms.
