Solution Summary

Stimulus exposure which suggests that learning occurs from exposure to some stimuli (e.g., heat, light, sound etc.) is discussed. Approaches to learning associated with classical and operant conditioning are examined.

(1) Examine the effects of stimulus exposure

Stimulus exposure suggests that learning occur from exposure to some stimuli (e.g., heat, light, sound etc.). For example, human associated learning indicates acquiring new or modifying knowledge, and/or behaviors. Myers (2000) conducted an experiment in which one cue (Cs), which predicts a second cue (US) can work to slow learning s by prior exposure to all or both stimuli. For example, three experiments were introduced in the experiment: participants had no exposure, given a second exposure, and then a combined one cue exposure/second exposure. All three groups were trained in the learning process that one color predicted the appearance of a rabbit, whereas another color did not. The findings showed that the groups differed in prior exposure to the first stimulus and the second stimulus. Thus, the findings suggest that unpaired exposure to a first stimulus and a second stimulus slows the learning process more than the exposure to the second stimulus alone.

More simple examples of exposure to learning refer to the process of social learning. To simplify, a rabbit is taught to blink at the sound of a stimulus (tone), and has no reaction after exposed to a loud tone. However, the tone is administered with a puff of air and the animal blinks. After the pairing of the puff of air and the tone, the animal will blink when the tone sounds, even without the puff of air. This example shows how individuals are conditioned by exposures to sound (Plotnik, 1993).
