Describe two situations that illustrate positive and negative punishment. You may describe a situation where you observed another person using or being punished.

The classic positive punishment is where an aversive stimulus is added to deter repeat behavior. This may range from mild to harsh such as a stern verbal correction (NO!) or a spanking. It is something unpleasant (scolding, spanking) added to the situation to reduce the likelihood of the behavior.

Negative punishment is where a positive stimulus is removed as a way of reducing unwanted behavior. This was our favorite method of modifying behavior for when our kids were little. If they didn't behave when we were on an outing (kicking, biting, yelling, running off and so forth), we immediately put them in the car and left with the simple comment: "Your behavior tells me you are not having fun."
