Four key milestones in the development of psychology as a discipline are:
Freud's work on the theories of personality encouraged science to look into the "unseen/unconscious/underlying" factors that influence a person's thinking pattern and behavior. Freud's personality theory was mainly centered on the unconscious. Freud's key concepts (listed below), more specifically his theory on defense mechanisms, today assist therapists in properly assessing and working cohesively with their patients and developing individualized treatment plans according to the needs of the individual.
For the most part, Jung's theory derived from Freud's theory; however, there were some differences. Instead of the Id, Ego, and Superego, Jung divided the components of personality into the conscious and the unconscious minds. The structure of Jung's unconscious mind was different than that of Freud's whereby it was made up of the Personal Unconscious and the Collective Unconscious which contained emotions that are blocked from consciousness but that can resurface with or without difficulty. According to Jung, a person's unconscious is not affected solely by emotions, but also by culture and geographic location. As a result, he believed there to be a second/deeper part to the unconscious affected by evolutionary human genes.
This solution addresses the four key milestones in the development of psychology as a discipline, and the importance of behavioral observation in cognitive psychology. 793 words with references.
