Motivational Interviewing can be used in both individual and group counseling (e.g. substance abuse treatment groups). It is a counseling approach that is goal-oriented and engages a client's intrinsic motivation to change a behavior. The counselor helps the client explore and work through their ambivalence about changing an unhealthy behavior while evoking motivation to make positive changes. The counselor acknowledges that making the decision to change can be long and difficult. There are many strategies a counselor can take to conduct motivational interviewing. Three strategies that can be used in the group counseling setting are: Exploration (exploring reasons for change), positive affirmations, and normalizing.
