Although you may have very good practices in place regarding maintaining clear boundaries at your fieldwork placement and during your sessions with clients, it can be more challenging to incorporate good boundaries in your personal life away from the counseling office. Do you talk to your family and friends using clinical jargon? Do you often think about your clients when you are on your off time? Do you often try to solve the problems of your family and friends? We often neglect to apply boundaries when it extends beyond our clinical work into the area of our personal lives. Neglecting these boundaries can have a profound effect on our levels of stress and burnout.

For this discussion, describe a specific example of an area where it has been challenging for you to maintain a clear boundary (at your fieldwork site, with a client, or away from the office). Discuss why a clear boundary in this instance would be important—for clinical reasons or for self-care. Provide at least one reference to the ethical standards or to a current article in the professional literature. Describe how you will take steps to address this situation.

Your post and responses are expected to be substantive in nature and to reference the assigned readings, as well as other theoretical, empirical, or professional literature to support your views and writings. Reference your sources using standard APA guidelines.
