(1) Explain the nature and function of semantic memory.

Semantic memory refers to explicit memories that are based on general facts and knowledge. For example , semantic memories is the recollection of specific facts that have been learned and stored into memory such as: (a) specific dates, (b)birthdays, (c) Christmas, (d) anniversaries, and (e) other dates or events of importance. Semantic memory is primarily associated with the meaning that it is explicit memories for everyday events, and is based on information (i.e., general knowledge) that is not based on the time when the information was learned. For instance, the individual may not remember when certain facts were learned, but they are stored in memory. Semantic memory is primarily associated with the meaning that is transmitted through language (Shvide & Anderson, 2011). According to Shvide & Anderson, much of human thought lies in the ability to store and retain meaningful information.
