Validity refers to whether a test measures whatever construct it is meant to measure. For example, if you have developed a test that is meant to measure intelligence (IQ), you could show that it is valid by comparing it to existing tests of IQ. If people get similar IQ scores from your test and existing tests, you would say that your test is valid. Similarly, I might be interested in whether a university entrance exam actually predicts how well students will do in university. If it predicts that well, the test has good validity.
