This Week's Readings
Please note that Chapter 11 in the Abnormal Psychology text uses terminology that applies to the DSM-IV-TR diagnoses. Be sure that you use the DSM-V as the primary source for diagnostic criteria for substance-related and addictive disorders. The textbook chapter contains useful information about causal factors and treatment.
Resources for Discussion and Application Assignment
Note that this week we have both a discussion and an application assignment. Here are some resources that you may find helpful:
First, here is an example of a substance use assessment from the DSM-V list of assessments:
APA_DSM5_Level-2-Substance-Use-Adult.pdf

The main page for DSM-V assessmnents is here:
http://www.psychiatry.org/practice/dsm/dsm5/online-assessment-measures#Level2
These assessments should not be the sole source of information for making a diagnosis, but are one tool that can be used.
Next, here's a link to the decision tree for excessive substance use:

You may find this helpful as you determine a diagnosis for the client, Mary Jane.
Finally, at this link you'll find a list of charts to help you differentiate different personality disorders from other disorders:

Diagnosing a Personality Disorder

Diagnosing a personality disorder can be extremely challenging and individuals with personality disorders are frequently misdiagnosed. In this Discussion, you will examine a diagnosis for a client with a personality disorder and discuss the factors that complicate that diagnosis.
To prepare:
• Review this week's Learning Resources.
• Focus on the reasons diagnosis of personality disorders is difficult.
• Review the section on personality disorders in the DSM.
• Select a personality disorder from the DSM for the focus of your Discussion post.
• Put the name of the diagnosis you chose in the subject line of your post.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a summary of the personality disorder you selected, as well as a brief description of a treatment approach you would recommend. Then, explain why giving this diagnosis may be complicated.

Personality Disorder Diagnosis: Avoidant Personality Disorder

Personality disorders, a kind of mental disorders (NHS, 2016) are, "conditions in which an individual differs significantly from an average person, in terms of how they think, perceive, feel or relate to others. Changes in how a person feels and distorted beliefs about other people can lead to odd behaviour, which can be distressing and may upset others." To further expound on this, it is important to look into the personality. The Mental Health Foundation (2016) does so as follows, "Personality describes the characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that make up who we are and how we feel about ourselves. For most people this remains fairly consistent across situations and time. For some individuals, however, they may experience difficulties in how they think and feel about themselves and others. For someone experiencing a personality disorder (PD) these difficulties are ongoing and problematic, negatively affecting their well-being, mental health and relationships with others." Personality disorders are diagnosed by and large by the utilisation of the DSM5, the latest (2013) iteration of the American Psychiatric Association's classification and diagnostic tool. In the US, the DSM and its updated versions are seen as the main diagnostic basis for psychiatric conditions.

For this exercise I have chosen to focus on a Cluster C Personality Disorder - the Avoidant Personality. According to Bressert (2015), "People with avoidant personality disorder experience long-standing feelings of inadequacy and are extremely sensitive to what others think about them. These feelings of inadequacy lead to the person to be socially inhibited and feel socially inept. Because of these feelings of inadequacy and inhibition, the person with avoidant personality disorder will seek to avoid work, school and any activities that involve socializing or interacting with others." So how is ...
