DR. Muchnick uses the genogram interview to get Susan and Tom to express what their concerns and expectations. For example, he works to move them toward a solution and beyond just expressing themselves. For instance, he explores what they would like to happen, and to listen to one another in efforts to understand and describe the problem. Foster, Jurkovic, Ferdinand, & Meadows asserts that the genogram is an assessment and therapeutic tool that can have "disequilibrating effects".
