    DR. Muchnick uses the genogram interview to get Susan and Tom to express what their concerns and expectations. For example, he works to move them toward a solution and beyond just expressing themselves. For instance, he explores what they would like to happen, and to listen to one another in efforts to understand and describe the problem. Foster, Jurkovic, Ferdinand, & Meadows asserts that the genogram is an assessment and therapeutic tool that can have "disequilibrating effects". Thus, partners are challenged to assume a systemic perspective that focuses not only on their objectives, but also on the partner's and his or her family process. For one instance, one issue that Dr. Muchnick gets the couple to agree on is how they work together as good parents. They both want to protect him and thus, the doctor explores some way they can work together in helping the child as a member of the family deal with the problem.
