Research indicates that the two stages of biological growth that have the greatest impact on an individuals' psychological, social, and emotional development are the adolescent years, and those of late adulthood. Adolescent from age to 10 to 20 are affected, psychologically, emotionally, and socially by changes in their bodies that occurred during puberty. For example, they are self-conscious, and perceive of themselves in different ways. Biro & Dorin (2011) note that the bodily changes for adolescents during puberty result in changes that ultimately lead to the development of sex characteristics, growth in body composition, and the origin of fertility stages (p. 686).
