The Situation

Having been handed the responsibility of heading up an advanced degree program in the College of Psychology, one of the key concerns I have to focus on is the practice of ethics across the board. Ethics in the academe, especially in a science that involves working on and working with human subjects is essential. The American Psychological Association's (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists present a code of conduct intended to guide practitioners in the 'highest ideals of psychology' (APA, 2010). The 2010 code are seen as enforceable rules at least within the APA, especially among their members and sphere of influence. While the standards are straightforward they are broad which means that application varies according to context. As head of the program, I am responsible for overseeing instructors, students and staff. This means that all research and activities carried out in the program is done so under necessary ethical review and adheres to APA ethical practice.
