The Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) is based on four group therapy models that are stated to be effective for substance abuse treatment: (1) Psycho-educational, (2) skills development, (3) cognitive-behavioral/problem solving, (4) support), and (5) interpersonal. Based on the TIP treatment, in all 5 of these groups there are core characteristics that the leader must possess.
