There are different types of receptors and neurons (and synapses between the two) associated with different types of behavior. A synapse is the junction point between two neurons (Synapses, n.d.). In other words, a synapse is a mechanical and electrically conductive link between two neurons that is formed at a narrow gap between the pre- and postsynaptic cells (gap junction). Neurons release neurotransmitters into the synapse, which bind to the post receptor of the second neuron. These chemical synapses allow neurons to form circuits within the central nervous system (or CNS) allowing the nervous system to connect to and control other systems of the body and the associated behavior.
