Effective Communication in the Courtroom
According to Cowles (2011), "in any courtroom a great deal of communication occurs: the witnesses, clients, attorneys, jury members, and judges all communicate amongst themselves. Attorneys, in particular, are essential in the outcome of a court case. They communicate all of the facts of the case, along with their client's arguments, to the judge and/or jury that rules on the case." Essentially, the communication or public speaking skills of a courtroom lawyer is deeply influential in connecting to the jury, the judge and all who take interest in the case, especially if it was a televised proceeding. This was exemplified, according to Mills (2004) Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 where persuasive arguments, communication strategies, character credibility, powerful speeches and even style of clothing impacted opinion and moved the jurors, judges as well as the TV-watching audiences towards a position.
