The danger of cigarette smoking may be viewed in which certain behaviors are lacking (e.g., self control). Self-control is needed to overcome the lapses that can occur between the smoking of a cigarette and the immediate gratification that comes with the smoking of another cigarette. There is considerable tolerance associated with cigarette smoking; therefore, smoking and non-smoking can be different (Pinel, 2006). For instance, according to Pinel, non-smokers may respond to a few puffs of a cigarette with various consequences such as nausea, vomiting, coughing, sweating, abdominal cramps, dizziness, flushing and diarrhea (p. 376). On the other hand, heavy smokers are addicted to smoking, and at more risk for developing diseases such as Smokers Syndrome or Buerger's disease. Smokers Syndrome is characterized by chest pain, labored breathing, wheezing, coughing and susceptibility to infection, and Buergers disease is a condition in which the blood vessels constrict whenever nicotine enters the bloodstream.
