Consultation is good for development of skills, conceptual growth, instructive feedback and self monitoring (for biases, projection of one's own issues etc.) For example, a practitioner would consult a peer for supervision when they are concerned that they may be in danger of not handling a case with objectivity as the case is too triggering of their own issues. Often, through supervision, they may be able to decide whether or not to refer out this patient or to proceed but with more supervision so that objectivity and competency is maintained.
