Women in US Politics

Many the support and publicity offered by Media Impresario Oprah Winfrey to Barack Obama to be one of the most vital points that gave him the American Presidency. Winfrey's life is an open book - from having grown up poor to the abuses she received either as a woman of colour or as a person struggling for a job and an education. Her rise to power and wealth echoes the rise to power and status that American Women now hold, especially in politics. Sat in important positions all over America, one can easily say that perhaps women have now taken their rightful place side by side with men in American politics, race aside. In the opposition on the national stage we have Sarah Palin whose popularity as Alaskan governor turned Republican VP Candidate eclipsed that of the party's presidential candidate. Palin's recent book and increasing popularity among all age groups has made her a political voice sought after. In the Democrat's side (the US being a two-party system), Hillary Clinton, NY State Senator and former first lady to Bill might have lost the Presidential contest for the party to current Pres. Obama but her position as Secretary of State makes her one of the most important political figures in the world stage. Prior to this administration Condoleezza Rice, an African-American technocrat and diplomat held said position, brokering important diplomatic deals and arrangements in behalf of Uncle Sam. All over the nation, women are in political office, locally or in State and equally as important, women hold powerful positions in the private sector and lobbying firms. A recent report by Time Magazine (2009) shared that while women still are not in parity in terms of earnings to the American Male, they represent a huge slice of the workforce, and equally, more say in the economic purchases of the household thereby becoming a force in terms of demand.
