    The gravitational acceleration is

    Where gravitational constant G = 6.674 10-11 m3 • kg-1 • s-1
    The mass of Mars M = 6.42 1023 kg
    The radius of Mars R = 3.396 106 m
    Substituting to above equation gives

    (b) The weight of a 0.50 kg rock on its surface
    W = mg = 0.50 * 3.71 = 1.86 N

    2. A 10 kg monkey is 106 m above the earth's surface.
    (a) What is its weight there?
    First find the gravitational acceleration at this place.
    The mass of Earth is M = 5.97 1024 kg
    The radius of the Earth is R = 6.37 106 m
    Then the monkey is r = 6.37 106 + 106 = 7.37 106 m to the center of the Earth.
    The gravitational acceleration is

    Then its weight is
    W = ma = 10 * 7.34 = 73.4 N.

    (b) What is its mass there?
    The mass does not change with its position, so it is still 10 kg
