    Does a new theory need to be based on another theory?

    I disagree with this statement:
    "A study that tries to construct a new theory must be based on another theory because the research question cannot be generated from vacuum."

    I believe one theory is not dependent of another for research question. But, can anyone help me to elaborate on why?
