If you are applying a radical expression, it works like this:
If no root appears in the check of the radical, you are to take take the square root of the number or expression under the radical. If a root value appears, then you are at take that particular root of the number or expression.
For example, a radical with a 4 under it equals 2, a radical with a nine under it equals 3....etc..
A number with a fraction for an exponent means the same thing. 4^(1/2) =2....just the same as applying the square root. 8^(1/3) is ...
