Hi there,

Thanks for letting me work on your post. Here is my explanation:

One of the websites that is very useful is http://cnx.org/content/m21938/latest/. One important aspect to apply rational expression is to follow five step procedure, as suggested by the website. The first one is to assume x as the variable. The second is to write out the equations according to the question. The third one is to find out the solution. The fourth one is to plug the solution back to the equation to see if it is right. The final step is to make conclusion.

For example, before adding any black and white marbles into the box in which we have 4 black marble and 2 white marbles, the ratio between black marble and white marble is 2:1. After adding equal number of black and white marbles, the ratio between black and white marble changes to 5:3. So how many black and white marbles are added?

Step 1: Assume x black and x white marbles are added.
Step 2: (x+4)/(x+2)=5/3.
Step 3: 5x+10=3x+12.
x=1.
Step 4: When x=1, left side=(1+4)/(1+2)=5/3=right side.
Step 5: 1 black and 1 white marbles are added.

Thanks.
Tony
