When solving a 3 3 determinant I broke the determinant down into a sequence of 2 2 determinants, remembering to alternate the signs of the leading coefficients in front of the smaller determinants. By extension, how might I calculate a 4 4 determinant?

    Please show all work thoroughly.

Also, what is the advantage of using the method of Substitution for solving a system of equations compared to using the method of addition?
