in order to do the subtraction we first take the LCM of the denominators. The LCM is calculated by breaking down the denominator into lowest terms

16 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
20 = 2 x 2 x 5

now lcm = 2 x 2 x 5 x 2 x 2 = 80 [ calculated at the product of unique numbers in the breakdown of each denominator]
