In reference to legal research, it has an instrumental purpose for society as it represents the foundation for how legal problems are solved wherein there is a requirement for lawyers to ensure that they are able to research pertinent case law to construct their arguments for any new cases. In addition, legal scholars rely upon legal research to gain perspective on issues such as the overall origins of any judicial decisions to gain a better perspective in regard to why case decisions were made for any particular case. Legal research relies upon primary sources of data and secondary sources of data in which both are important to understand as a researcher. These help researchers to gain perspective on any underlying issues associated with legal text as it provides the information necessary for the researcher based upon the textual past in regard to legal decisions that have previously been rendered.

Legal research is influenced by different forces, which include the law schools that students attend, professional associations that lawyers are aligned with, the research councils that govern scholarly research, and other variables that will dictate the type of legal research that is conducted by the researcher.
