Casey Anthony was indicted in October 2008 on a charge of the first-degree murder of her daughter Caylee Marie Anthony. In December 2008, a meter reader found the skeletal remains of Caylee near Casey's home. Caylee was reported missing on July 15, 2008, a month after she disappeared, according to her mother Casey. In April 2009, the state attorney's office said that the prosecutors planned to seek the death penalty for Casey. On July 5, 2011, Casey was found not guilty of first-degree murder after a thirty-three-day trial in Orlando, Florida. Casey was convicted of charges of misleading law enforcement and was released from jail on July 17, 2011. The verdict had been termed as travesty of justice and many people feel Casey got away with murder.

The Casey Anthony case was extensively covered by local media in Florida. When a case receives this amount of local coverage, it usually goes national but only during the trial. In this case, before the defendant had gone to trial, the case of Caylee's murder had been on the national television talk show circuit, making the ratings for ABC's 20/20, NBC's Dateline, Fox's America's Most Wanted, Nancy Grace, Greta Van Susteren, and Geraldo Rivera.

Casey Anthony was your typical white American woman in the sense that any crime involving white women whether they are perpetrators or victims, receives far more extensive coverage than similar crimes involving minorities. The reason that her case was extensively covered as if it was the only case involving a missing child that eventually resulted in a charge of murder, was because she was a moderately attractive white American woman. America has a racist past and it is still very racist, and therefore, an implicit doctrine exists throughout the country that places a hierarchy on the opinion of whose lives are more important. At the top of this hierarchy is white women and children in regard to the media and even police departments as well as the public. Therefore, when a white child goes missing, extensive media coverage will be given by most if not all media stations despite the fact that many children are abducted every day or go missing. The caveat is that the media relies upon ratings, and in American society, because of the perceived hierarchy that I mentioned, white children or white women's lives are considered more important than those of minorities.

Therefore, media coverage tends to be extensive and absolute in cases such as the Casey Anthony trial as well as prior to authorities finding the body of her daughter. It is predicated upon the aforementioned racist history of the country that still permeates throughout society.
