American presidents have used crime as a political tool in the past and continue to do so today. The most egregious example of this was when George H.W. Bush used against Michael Dukakis negative campaigning focused on Willie Horton, a criminal released on a weekend furlough program under the tutelage of Dukakis's reign in office despite serving a life sentence for murder. Horton went on to commit several crimes while not returning to prison. Following the weekend furlough, Bush used the Revolving Door ads in the 1988 presidential campaign against Dukakis. Bush successfully brought crime into politics by making a correlation between Horton and safety, which would result in unsafe citizens if Dukakis was elected as president according to Bush's campaign strategy.

The strategy has proven to be effective in stirring up "WHITE" fear as most of the time that these ads are employed it is garnered toward the majority population in an attempt to frighten voters into voting for the ...
