The events leading up to the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban missile crisis were a part of the larger context regarding the Cold War between America and Russia. Leading up to these two crucial events was also the Cuban Revolution, which occurred during President Eisenhower's administration wherein Fidel Castro and his troops after a 6 year insurgency ousted the dictator Fulgencio Batista. This information is pertinent regarding Eisenhower because during his presidency he espoused the Domino doctrine as well as the use of covert operations similar to the "Bay of Pigs" to carry out covert undertakings against governments that his administration considered communist proxies for Russia. Therefore, leading up to the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban missile crisis was an administration that already was involved in supporting covert operations in Vietnam by supplying the French with support.
