Digestion begins when the saliva glands come into contact with food. The food enters the mouth, where the saliva breaks down the food when you chew it with your teeth transforming it into bolus and then you swallow it. The organs of the digestive system contain a layer of muscle that enables their walls to move. Food moves from one organ to the next through muscular action called peristalsis.
