    In order to define culturally competent care appropriate for a diverse workplace nurses need to understand that certian behaviors of patients even if they do not fit the "normal standards" of patient behavior. These behaviors exhibited by pateints such as refusing to take a certain medication or demanding that a family member feeds him/her may be a product of the patient's cultural beliefs and values. Nurses need to be advocates for patients accomodating the behaviors. Culturally competnt care ,by attempting to minimize miscommunication that characterizes culturally dissonant medical encounters, will help to reduce racially based health disparities where they exist.
