Pros and Cons of Pay-for-Performance Programs

Describe the objectives of pay-for-performance policies.
* Pay for Performance systems are a modification of fee-for-service or capitation systems. These forms of policies reward providers for doing certain things such as: high patient satisfaction, meeting a goal that requires specific percentage female patients receiving regular mammograms, or a low rate of medical errors.
* The idea is to create incentives to provide a better quality of care- this may cost insurers more money initially but will in theory lead to less overall expenses in the long run.
* Most often used to encourage providers to follow the recommended guidelines or meet the treatment goals for high-cost conditions.
* Performance awards can be given in many forms. Some of them could include:
- Physician bonuses
- Enhanced fee-schedules
- Directing more patients to high-performing providers and/or health plans.
